Four Points Mom & Books – 2019 Recap

Four Points Mom & Books – 2019 Recap

Alright, alright, alright …

Matthew Mcconaughey

Oh hi there, MM.  Have I ever mentioned how much I love Dazed and Confused?  I remember watching it for the first time in eighth grade and my mind just exploding.  How cool would it be to be an eighth grader heading off to high school and being taken under the wing by upcoming seniors?  What a dream!  I wore that VHS out … yes, it was a VHS because I’m that old.  What does any of this have to do with my post about my favorite books of the year?  Nothing.  Absolutely nothing.  I just found myself saying MM’s famous line … alright alright alright.  (If you’d like me to dive into the vitality of this movie to our culture, just let me know and I’ll pull out my notebooks from my radio television film classes at UT … ha).

Anyways … lol. 😉

The anticipation is just radiating around us right now … finally, you will find out what all I’ve been reading this year and which of these books made my best of list.  (I hope you read that sarcastically …)

Since I have 36 books that I haven’t reviewed yet, I’m not going to do in-depth reviews on all of these I’m adding below.  However, I did want to point out which ones I really liked and highly recommend you add to your to-read list and which ones I’d recommend you skip.  Plus, keep reading to find out which of the books I read in 2019 made my Four Points Mom Favorites of 2019 list!

April - December 2019 Recap

SKIP IT!

Meh … I enjoyed her in Cougar Town and Dawson’s Creek but didn’t love her book.

READ IT!

I love thrillers and this one did not disappoint – didn’t see the ending coming at all!

READ IT!

I really enjoyed this girl-power-tinged book by the author of Eat Pray Love.

SKIP IT!

My husband loved this book, but I thought it could have been about 1/3 of the length and still would have explained all I need to know about the beginning of Nike.

SKIP IT!

There are several other parenting books that I like more than this one.

READ IT!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book. Keep reading and you just might find it in my top books of the year …

READ IT!

Out of all the books I read this year, this one stuck with me the most.  I can’t recommend it enough.

READ IT!

This is in my top two of Hildebrand’s books.  It makes me want to go back to 1969.

SKIP IT!

I love thrillers, but this one was too sloooooow.

SKIP IT!

This book made many top books of the year lists, but I just couldn’t get into it.

SKIP IT!

I love Colleen Hoover, but I just couldn’t get into these characters.  Plus, I was really annoyed with the decisions the characters made over and over again.

READ IT!

I loved this book so much.  It really shined a light on some of the crud we get caught up in as parents that we should avoid.

SKIP IT!

Again, here’s a popular book that I just didn’t love.  I think I’ve overdone the WWII historical fiction genre these past few years and need a break from the era’s horrific realities.  It was a unique story that was well written, though.

READ IT!

Jojo Moyes shocked me with this incredible book.  It’s nothing like her previous Me Before You series, but I loved it even more than those.

READ IT!

This is a really popular book out right now and I enjoyed it.  I loved getting the therapist’s perspective and having her own life normalized.

READ IT!

I loved Laurie Gelman’s Class Mom (she says what all of us class moms wish we could say …), and her follow-up was just as fun.

READ IT!

Lisa Jewell has become one of my favorite authors recently.  This is such a cute book with so many wonderful characters.

READ IT!

Here’s another book that reminded me of Lisa Jewell’s writing.  Loved it!

SKIP IT!

This is one of my least favorite books by Hildebrand.  Read one of her other ones instead.  🙂

SKIP IT!

A little too cheesy for me.  I don’t know what else I expected from a Hallmark book, but still.

Four Points Mom Favorites of 2019

As I’ve done in the past, I’m going to list honorable mentions and then my favorite book of the year.  Click here to see the Best of 2018 and here to see the Best of 2017.  Now, on to the honorable mentions of 2019 …

The Summer of ’69 by Elin Hilderbrand

The Gifted School by Bruce Holsinger

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles

The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes

Okay, I tried my best and couldn’t narrow it down to four honorable mentions and one favorite book of the year.  Instead, I have you four honorable mentions and three favorite books of the year.  :). Drum roll please for my three favorites ….

Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

The Road Back To You by Ian Morgan Cron and Suzanne Stabile

Whew … I’m exhausted just thinking about all the work my brain’s put in this year reading these books.  But I loved every (okay, maybe not every) minute of it.
